Visit by Waldaschaff group to Clonakilty August 2018

A 31 strong official delegation from Waldaschaff, Bavaria in Germany visited their twin town of Clonakilty from 1st to 8th August 2018. After enduring temperatures of 38 degrees at home the German visitors exited Kerry airport to the welcome soft Irish rain.
At a reception later in O'Donovan's Hotel the delegation were welcomed by Michael Kenneally, Chairman of Clonakilty Town Twinning Association. Marcus Grimm, Burgermeister of Waldaschaff and Kurt Dyroff, Chairman of Freundeskreis Waldaschaff both spoke about the importance of the friendship between the twin towns and the importance of getting young people involved in order that the twinning would survive and flourish.
The delegation included 15 children children who had very successful circus, music and art workshops with Markus Kunkel, Pat Uí Mairtín, & colleagues. They stayed in Clonakilty Convent of Mercy without whose support the visit could not have happened.
The highlight of the visit was a Circus performance after Mass on Sunday in Emmet Square by the children.

On Sunday after a traditional Irish breakfast the delegation paraded from Astna Square to Mass in Clonakilty Church.
Activities during the week include surfing on Thursday at Inchydonney which was hugely popular with our German friends. On Friday the delegation were treated by Clonakilty Model Railway Village to a very enjoyable street train ride and a tour of the wonderful Model Village.
Freundeskreis Clonakilty hosted the 'Farewell Evening' in the Courtyard Bar on Tuesday and Kurt Dyroff, Chairman of the Freundeskreis mentioned that discussions about the 30th Anniversary of the twinning in Waldaschaff in 2019 would be taking place shortly.
